A complete reference for every configurable setting in ScoreCam. Access these settings by tapping the gear icon from the main camera screen.
Camera Options
Controls for camera behavior, zoom, stabilization, and on-screen aids.
When enabled, ScoreCam asks you to confirm before stopping a recording. This prevents accidental stops mid-game.
Default: On
Four quick-access zoom buttons appear on the camera screen. Each button can be set to a specific zoom level. Tap a button during recording to instantly jump to that level. Transitions between levels are smooth and configurable via Zoom Speed.
Button 1Default 0.5× on ultra-wide devices, 1× otherwise
Button 2Default 1× on ultra-wide, 1.5× otherwise
Button 3Default 2×
Button 4Default 3×
Displays the current zoom level as a percentage on screen while you are actively zooming.
Default: On
Controls how quickly the camera transitions between zoom levels when you tap a zoom button. Higher values produce faster, snappier transitions; lower values produce a slower, smoother feel.
Default: 3.0
Displays an on-screen slider for adjusting the microphone recording volume during a session. Useful for fine-tuning crowd noise vs. commentary balance.
Default: Off
Controls the rear LED. Off leaves it disabled. On keeps it on continuously (useful in low light). Auto fires the flash only when capturing a still photo.
OffLED always off
OnLED on continuously (torch mode)
AutoFlash fires on photo capture only
Default: Off
Applies AVFoundation's built-in video stabilization to reduce handheld shake. Strongly recommended for sideline recording. May slightly crop the frame edges.
Default: On
Overlays a rule-of-thirds grid on the camera preview to help with composition and framing. The grid does not appear in recorded video.
Default: Off
Shows a horizon-level indicator using the device's gyroscope. Helps you keep the camera straight when recording on a tripod or over an uneven surface.
Default: Off
Tap-and-Hold Camera Lock
Press and hold anywhere on the camera preview to lock camera parameters. Choose which parameters are locked using the three settings below.
Locks the auto-focus point at its current position when you tap and hold. Prevents the camera from refocusing on a passing player or spectator.
Default: On
Locks the camera's auto-exposure (AE) so brightness stays constant even when bright or dark objects enter the frame.
Default: On
Locks white balance so colors stay consistent throughout the recording. Useful when shooting under mixed or artificial lighting.
Default: Off
Highlight Video Clips PRO
Settings for capturing short highlight clips during a recording. See How It Works → Marking Highlights for a full workflow explanation.
Controls how and when highlight clips are generated.
OffHighlight capture is disabled
On — Create on StopMarks timestamps during recording; all clips are cut from the finished video after you stop. Most accurate timing. Recommended.
On — Save ImmediatelyGenerates each clip in real time. Clips are available before recording ends but may run 2–3 seconds short due to buffer limitations.
Default: Off
When On, tapping the highlight gesture opens a small menu so you can choose the clip length each time. When Off, ScoreCam always uses Duration 1 without prompting.
Default: On
The first clip length option, and the default when prompting is disabled. A value of 0 means "since the last pause" — the clip starts from when recording was last resumed, capturing the entire current segment.
Default: 0 (Since last pause)
Second clip length option, in seconds.
Default: 10 seconds
Third clip length option, in seconds.
Default: 15 seconds
Fourth clip length option, in seconds.
Default: 20 seconds
Whether highlight clips include the game audio track. Turn Off for silent clips or if you plan to add music in post-production.
Default: On
When On, ScoreCam automatically stitches all highlight clips from the session into a single reel video after recording stops. The reel is saved separately from the individual clips.
Default: Off
The visual transition used between clips in the highlight reel.
Cross DissolveClips fade into each other (default)
Push Left / RightNext clip slides in from the side
Push Up / DownNext clip slides in from top or bottom
Fade to BlackEach clip fades out to black before the next begins
None (Cut)Direct cut between clips, no transition
Default: Cross Dissolve

Default: Off
The name shown for this ScoreCam device in Scoreboard Remote's device list when connecting. If left blank, ScoreCam automatically uses the device model plus a unique identifier (e.g.,
iPhone 17 Pro Max (A3B2)). Enter a custom name such as “Game Camera” or “Sideline Cam” to make it easier to select the right device at venues with multiple ScoreCam devices. Restart ScoreCam after saving.
Default: Auto (device model + unique ID)
External Drive Recording PRO
Record video directly to an external SSD instead of saving to the Photos library. Ideal for coaches and videographers who need large storage capacity, fast access to raw files, or want to avoid filling up their device.
Requires iOS 17 or later. The external drive must be connected via USB-C before recording starts.
Master toggle for external drive recording. When enabled, you will be prompted to choose a folder on the connected drive the first time you record. Subsequent recordings go to the same folder automatically.
Default: Off
Opens the system folder picker to select or change the destination folder on your external drive. You can tap this at any time — for example, to redirect recordings to a different folder mid-season. The chosen folder is remembered across sessions.
How It Works
When external drive recording is active, ScoreCam writes the video file directly to your chosen folder on the SSD as you record. When you stop recording, a brief Saving to external drive… spinner appears while the file is finalized — this may take several seconds for long recordings as the video's index is written to the drive. The completed video does not appear in the Photos app; use the Files app to browse, play, or copy your recordings from the drive.
Auto-Detection
If you tap Record with a compatible drive connected but external drive mode turned off, ScoreCam will detect the drive and offer to switch automatically. You can also choose to record to Photos as normal.
Drive Requirements
The key requirement is sustained write speed — use any drive (SSD or USB flash) that can sustain the write speed for your chosen recording setting. The table below shows the speeds needed. Most modern USB 3.0 drives meet these easily; old USB 2.0 thumb drives and spinning hard drives do not.
| Requirement | Minimum | Notes |
| Drive type | Any USB drive with sufficient sustained write speed (see table below) | Modern USB 3.0 SSDs and fast flash drives both work; old USB 2.0 thumb drives and spinning HDDs typically cannot sustain enough write speed |
| Cable | USB-C to USB-C, USB 3.1 rated or higher | A cheap or USB 2.0 cable caps throughput regardless of drive speed — this is the most common cause of issues |
| Hub/dock (if used) | USB 3.0 passthrough on the port used for the drive | Many hubs have USB 2.0 ports mixed in; check the hub's specifications |
| iOS version | iOS 17 or later | External storage detection API requires iOS 17 |
Sustained Write Speed Needed by Resolution
| Recording Setting | Min Sustained Write |
| 1080p 30fps, standard bitrate (~15 Mbps) | ~3 MB/s |
| 1080p 60fps / high bitrate (~40 Mbps) | ~6 MB/s |
| 4K 30fps (~100 Mbps) | ~13 MB/s |
| 4K 60fps / high bitrate (~300 Mbps) | ~40 MB/s |
The limiting factor in practice is nearly always the cable or hub quality, not the drive itself. A high-speed SSD connected via a USB 2.0 cable will perform no better than a budget flash drive.
Troubleshooting
Drive not detectedCheck that you are using a native USB-C to USB-C cable (no adapters). Try the drive connected directly to the phone without a hub. Ensure iOS 17+ is installed.
"External Drive Unavailable" at record timeTap Re-select Folder in the error alert — this refreshes the drive access and starts recording immediately after you repick the folder. If the problem recurs, unplug and replug the drive.
Drive gets warm during recordingNormal — all USB drives generate heat during sustained write operations (this is NAND flash physics and cannot be avoided). ScoreCam already uses HEVC encoding by default, which minimises the amount of data written compared to older H.264 encoding. Let the drive sit in open air rather than in a pocket or bag, and avoid covering the connector end. Warmth alone does not indicate a problem.
Drive disconnects mid-recordingSome drives — especially larger capacity models — draw more current under sustained write load than the phone's USB port alone can supply. If your drive disconnects during recording, try connecting through a powered hub (a hub with its own power bank or wall adapter attached). This is a troubleshooting step, not a universal requirement — most drives work fine bus-powered.
Long delay after tapping StopNormal for external drives over USB. The app displays a "Saving to external drive…" spinner during this time — the video file is being finalized on the SSD. Do not unplug the drive until the spinner disappears.
